Dr. Berger’s Pregnancy Testing Protocol Following Tubal Reversal Surgery

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Once you are pregnant after tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, you will need to observe Dr. Berger’s pregnancy protocol. This involves getting blood draws for your HCG (human chorionic gonadatropin) level as soon as you have a positive home pregnancy test. The HCG levels will need to be repeated twice a week until they reach a level of 1500. At this point, you will need a transvaginal ultrasound to ensure that the pregnancy is in the uterus. If it is an intrauterine pregnancy, no further testing is required related to the tubal reversal. If it is not documented to be in the uterus, medication to end the pregnancy is recommended to prevent the possibility of a tubal pregnancy developing to the point of tubal rupture.

Tubal Reversal vs In Vitro Fertilization Testimonial

Monday, March 17th, 2008

We were told by several doctors that in-vitro was the only option for us to conceive. We were fortunate to find Dr Berger’s tubal reversal website and felt reassured and excited after receiving the information package with the DVD. We had such a great experience with Dr Berger and his staff. Surgery couldn’t have gone any better. I felt great the very next day and ready to start the challenge ahead of us trying to conceive our tubal reversal baby. One and a half years later, we are so blessed to announce the birth of our son, Peyton Charles. He was born on February 7th at 9:22 A.M., 6 lbs. 15 oz. and 21 inches.

Thank You Dr. Berger for giving me the chance to be a mom again. Is Hair Loss One of the Symptoms of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome?

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

I have been losing my hair since my TL 17 months ago. Not just a little…it comes out in clumps when I wash or brush my hair. My hair used to be so thick my hairdresser had to ‘thin’ it out during haircuts. Now I can barely keep it up in a clip. It is so thin it just slides back out. I asked my hairdresser, thinking it was from the chemicals…she said it was stress. I asked my doctor…she tested for thyroid problems…normal. Never heard of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS) until this message board. It seems ‘hair loss’ is one of the symptoms of PTLS…who knew? Does anyone else have this problem?

Tubal Reversal Patients Discuss The Benefits Of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Dr. Berger’s tubal reversal patients and members of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center’s message board discuss taking Omega 3s while trying to conceive and during pregnancy. Omega 3s are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). EFAs are essential to nutrition and help to maintain energy, support reproduction and fertility, and promote healthy visual and brain development during pregnancy and lactation. As one tubal reversal patient mentioned, a good source of Omega 3s is Fish Oil capsules. However, not all Fish Oil capsules are manufactured equally. Make sure you purchase a brand of Fish Oil capsules that has been manufactured to ensure that no potential toxins or contaminants are detected.

Pictures of Our Tubal Reversal Baby - Testimonial # 711

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

“I just wanted to send you some pictures of our tubal reversal baby. I had my tubal reversal on February 15th, 2007. It was such a great experience. On Monday morning June 13th 2007 I saw a pregnancy test in the bathroom (had tons on hand like we all do) so I decided to take one just for fun. It came out with a faint line. I ended up taking six tests. My son was born on February 26th, 2008 at 7:15 am - 7 lbs 12 oz, 20 1/2 inches long. I love this little guy so much. The look on my husband’s face when he saw his son come into the world made it all worth it. Best of luck to everyone. Dr. Berger is the best at hand and will do all he can to make your dreams come true.”

How Do Older Children Feel About Tubal Reversal?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Members of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Message Board discuss how their older children have reacted after finding out that their mothers have undergone tubal reversal surgery to have another baby. Some patients have chosen to discuss the issue with their children prior to surgery, while others have waited until after surgery. Becki even waited until she was pregnant before informing her children, who are 13, 12, 10, and 7, and she states that they were all “screaming and jumping up and down” with excitement. Other patients have not been as fortunate as Becki and report that their children were not happy about the fact that there might be a new baby in the house. A new baby brings many changes to a household and these changes can be difficult for some older children to accept.

HCG Levels Are Looking Good For Tubal Reversal Patient

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Sharon, a tubal reversal patient of Dr. Gary Berger at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, is encouraged because she has just learned that her HCG (pregnancy hormone) levels have doubled during the past two days, indicating that her pregnancy is progressing as expected. In a normally developing pregnancy, quantitative serum HCG levels double every 2-3 days during the earliest weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Berger recommends the use of the HCG calculator on the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center website that shows the HCG doubling time for individual patients. When serum HCG reaches 1500-2000, an ultrasound examination should be performed to look for the intrauterine gestation sac as proof of an intrauterine pregnancy.

Tubal Reversal Patients Get An Early Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Women who have already had a tubal reversal or are thinking of having one should begin taking prenatal vitamins to get a head start before they conceive. Dr. Gary Berger at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center encourages his patients who are planning a pregnancy after tubal reversal surgery to begin taking prenatal vitamins that include 1 mg of folic acid daily. Folic acid protects against the risk of neural tube defects, or abnormalities in the development of the brain and spinal cord in the developing fetus.

Pregnancies Occur With All Tubal Lengths Following Tubal Reversal

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Dr. Berger’s detailed statistics on all of his tubal reversal patients include tubal length, age of patient, and type of tubal ligation. Dr. Berger’s patients have had successful pregnancies with all different tubal lengths following tubal reversal surgery. The Weekly Pregnancy Reports Forum of the Tubal Reversal Message Board documents the wide range of tubal lengths that have led to pregnancies. Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal Surgery

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

After six home pregnancy tests and beyond herself with emotions, Ms. Licia posts on the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center message board that she has filled out her Pregnancy Report Form to let Dr. Berger know that she is pregnant following her tubal reversal procedure. Many message board members as well as staff members from Dr. Berger’s office offer their congratulations and encouragement. Dr. Berger likes his patients to keep in contact with his office regarding how the pregnancy is going. Continued communication with patients even after surgery allows not only accurate statistical information but also allows patients the opportunity to let us know what is going and gives them the opportunity to ask questions and receive information. This is just another example of Dr. Berger’s dedication to excellent patient care.

Tubal Ligation and PTLS

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

A member of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center message board is curious if there is any correlation between the timing of a tubal ligation and occurrence of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS). She asks if PTLS symptoms are more severe if the tubal ligation is performed right after the birth of a child verses waiting a while before having the tubal ligation. Other members pose other questions such as the correlation between PTLS and the location of where the tubes are interrupted? Even though at this time there are no answers to these questions, we are hoping that answers from other members who have have PTLS will give us some insight. There are many patients who come to Dr. Berger for tubal reversal surgery due to PTLS, and we find that about 90% of the women report an improvement in their symptoms after surgery. The Tubal Reversal Message Board offers a wonderful place for encouragement as well as information about all issues relating to tubal ligation and tubal reversal.

Dr. Monteith’s First Meeting With Dr. Berger

Monday, March 10th, 2008

The day came when I went to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for my first meeting with Dr. Berger. Dr. Berger came out to meet me and we went into his office and talked for about 45 minutes. I explained my desire to become a tubal ligation reversal specialist. He told me about his background and how he had come to specialize in tubal ligation reversal. His training, history, and career development were very interesting. I was especially interested in how he had evolved to solely provide such a specialized service. Although we were very different people, it became clear to me that we shared many common fundamental beliefs.

Will I Be Able To Have My Tubal Ligation Reversed?

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Many women call Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center seeking tubal reversal but fearful that their tubal ligation procedure may have left them with inadequate lengths for repair. Dr. Berger is able to restore the tubes in 98% of cases, regardless of the tubal ligation method. If you can obtain a copy of your tubal ligation operative note and pathology report, this is helpful but not required. You may fax the report to Dr. Berger. If you have reason to believe your tubes were severely damaged, you may be able to have a screening laparoscopy while at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. If there is adequate tubal length for the repair, Dr. Berger will follow the laparoscopy with a “bikini cut” incision and proceed to repair your tubes.

Body Mass Index (BMI) and Tubal Reversal Surgery

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Women who wish to have tubal reversal surgery with Dr. Berger must meet the required BMI limit, which is 34.9 or less. The BMI limit is in place to optimize patient safety, since obesity causes increased risks for surgical patients, including anesthesia and wound healing complications. It is also better to be at a healthy weight when women are trying to conceive, because obesity during pregnancy can lead to gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. A patient with a higher BMI is required to submit a BMI Verification Form three weeks prior to surgery to show her progress toward meeting the BMI goal.

I Have All the Symptoms of PTLS

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

My tubal ligation was in May of 2003 Right after the birth of my youngest. I’m 34yr old now and since then I’ve had lower abdominal pain which a ultra sound (showed nothing), depressed (told due to child birth) then my doctor (who performed surgery) retired and was told I have manic depression (put me on antidepressants), heavy, painful periods (tampon and pad soaked), cramping, Headaches, trouble sleeping (hot flashes), anger, memory problem, DR wanted me on Birth control, pain during sex (uterus pain, still cant find anything wrong), vaginal dryness but told its all in my head. Now doctors are saying its possibly BIPOLAR?? My guess is anything as long as they don’t admit its from the TL. I was a happy and very different person until my TL.. If I would have known then what I know NOW I would have NEVER HAD IT DONE.. I am very much wanting it reversed.. not for MORE kids right now, but maybe in future.. I JUST want to be myself again.

Is a Tubal Reversal Right for Me?

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Michaela is a potential patient who is suffering from PTLS, but is unsure if she should undergo a tubal reversal with Dr. Berger. She is afraid that spending the money for a tubal reversal is selfish, even though she knows a tubal reversal would “take away all the pain I deal with every day.” She is reassured by other message board members that having a tubal reversal is the best thing she could do for herself because “mothers and women put themselves last too often” and she deserves the chance to put an end to her PTLS symptoms.
