76) Hot Flashes After a Tubal Ligation
Many women report the onset of hot flashes following their tubal ligation. This is one of the various symptoms of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS). Many women discuss this symptom on the Tubal Reversal Message Board. One of their major frustrations is that most doctors and nurses are not familiar with PTLS and are not helpful to them. In an ongoing PTLS Study at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, approximately 90% of women report improvement in their PTLS symptoms after tubal ligation reversal surgery. This initial report from the PTLS Study has been published in the Society for Reproductive Surgeons (SRS) Newsletter: 1 (1) 2008, page 5.

77) Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS) by Gary Sterling Berger, M.D.
In a large population of women undergoing tubal ligation reversal, some women report PTLS as one of their reasons for seeking surgery. A follow-up study was undertaken to see if there might be a change in symptoms after tubal reversal among this select group of women. In 2005-2007, 91 women described having PTLS symptoms prior to undergoing tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Overall, 90% of these patients reported improvement in one or more of their PTLS symptoms, 8% reported no change, and 2% reported worsening of symptoms after tubal reversal. This is a non-experimental, "before and after" study of a selected population of women who described having post tubal ligation symptoms. It was surprising to find such a high percentage of patients reporting improvement in their various symptoms at 6 months and 12 months after tubal reversal surgery. No mechanism is suggested to explain these results. Based on the results obtained so far, further study is warranted.

Today they report the success of the operation as confirmed by a positive pregnancy test submitted by the patient via her Pregnancy Report Form. 81) What Will My Tubal Reversal Incision Look Like?
Tara, a future patient of Dr. Monteith at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center asks other members of the Tubal Reversal Message Board what to expect about the size of her surgical incision. Other message board members who have already had their tubes untied by Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. Charles Monteith, the tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, describe the incision as 2 to 3 inches in length across the top of the pubic hair line. This incision is about one-third of the length of the average c-section incision. This type of incision results in the least amount of pain after surgery and the fastest recovery time. The incision is hidden by the pubic hair and is difficult to see by 1 to 2 months after surgery. Eventually, it becomes invisible.

83) Special Thank You To Dr. Berger and Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center
A Tubal Reversal Message Board member, 'HopesAndDreams' posts, "I had my 6 week post baby check up with my OB after delivering by C-section. My doctor said that he and my other OB who was also in the OR both commented on how well my tubes looked. They told everyone in the OR to look at the tubes because he said they looked like they have never been touched. They could not tell where the repair had been done on either tube. They all could not believe that they looked that good. I of course jumped at the chance to tell everyone who hadn't already heard my Tubal Reversal story. Even after the TR, Dr. Berger and his staff made themselves available to me and my OB for advice during my first pregnancy which was lost last year at this time. Anyway, both of my Ob's admired Dr. Berger's excellent work. And so do I..... Without his ability we would not have our precious little guy to love and to hold. So, with all of that said, I just want to again thank Dr. Berger and his great staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for everything they have done to help my Hopes and Dreams come true!"

84) Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Patients Reports Their HCG Levels
Many members of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Message Board report their HCG levels soon after becoming pregnant. Since tubal surgery is associated with an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, we recommend early urine pregnancy testing at home and then twice weekly blood HCG testing at your physicians office. When the HCG level reaches 1500 mIU/dL, a vaginal ultrasound exam should be performed to identify an intrauterine gestation sac. If no gestational sac is seen, the HCG test and ultrasound should be repeated in one or two days. If the HCG is rising and no gestational sac is seen, the pregnancy is abnormal. This abnormal pregnancy will either be a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. In either case, we recommend ending such a pregnancy with an injection of methotrexate in order to prevent the possible complication of tubal rupture from an ectopic pregnancy.

Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center offers many different payment options for repairing blocked fallopian tubes. Patients often ask if insurance will cover the cost of a tubal reversal surgery. Some insurance companies do but most do not. Patients should submit their claims to their health insurance carrier and the reimbursement check will go directly to them if their insurance policy provides reimbursement for tubal anastomosis. When contacting your insurance company, useful information to have on hand are the insurance code (ICD-9) for bilateral tubal occlusion (628.2) and the procedure code (CPT) for tubotubal anastomosis (58750). Any pre-certification or pre-authorization required by insurance policies are the responsibility of the patient to obtain. Since our standard and discount fees are all-inclusive, we do not provide a cost breakdown to insurance companies.

89) HSG After Tubal Ligation Reversal
Jennifer, a member of the Tubal Reversal Message Board, discusses her experiences with her hysterosalpingogram (HSG). HSG is an x-ray procedure during which radioopaque dye is throughgh the uterus and fallopian tubes. When the x-ray is taken, tubal patency (opening) can be documented by seeing the dye pass through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity. When a patient has an HSG, the tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center recommend they have a digital copy of the HSG (or films) and the report mailed to us for examination. Jennifer's HSG showed a blockage of one of her tubes and she decided to have her blocked tube repaired at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. She is now the happy mother of a baby girl!

But for the thousands of women who experience the devastating symptoms of PTLS every day, the syndrome is real. Aside from the obvious reason for wanting another baby after tubal ligation, the desire for relief of symptoms is another reason why many women choose to have tubal reversal surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

She was born September 6, 2009. Here is a picture of her. We had our tubal reversal surgery December 31st 2008 and found out we were pregnant on February 13th 2009. You did a great job and we hope to bring our little Berger miracle to see you soon." - Keith and Brandy K.
