126) How Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith Verify Tubal Patency after Reverse Tubal Ligation
Tubal ligation reversal involves microsurgical techniques to open and reconnect the fallopian tube segments that remain after a tubal ligation procedure. After opening the blocked ends of the remaining tubal segments, a narrow flexible stent is gently threaded through their inner cavities or lumens into the uterine cavity. This ensures that the fallopian tube is open from the uterine cavity to its fimbrial end. The newly created tubal openings are then drawn next to each other by placing a retention suture in the connective tissue that lies beneath the fallopian tubes. The retention suture avoids the likelihood of the tubal segments subsequently pulling apart. This is how the tubal reversal doctors with the most experience, Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, ensure the tubes are open after reversing tubal ligations.

127) Is Reverse of Tubal Ligation Possible after Essure Sterilization?
Essure is a permanent birth control device that has recently become available as an alternative to traditional tubal ligation methods. This link shows an online video animation of the placement of the Essure device into the fallopian tubes. The spring-like device is inserted through the uterine cavity into the tubal openings using a hysteroscope. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are able to reverse Essure tubal ligation by cutting the device out of the uterine muscle and then implanting the remaining fallopian tube into the uterine cavity through a new opening in the uterus. This procedure is called tubouterine implantation. So reverse of tubal ligation is possible for Essure.

128) What to Expect After Tubal Reversal Surgery
Patients travel from all over the world to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center and wonder what to expect after tubal reversal surgery. Some muscle tenderness when sitting or standing and discomfort or burning around the incision site may be present for several days after the tubal reversal procedure. A firmness or "healing ridge" is normal at the incision site. This will disappear gradually over the next few weeks. Most patients are able to return home the day after their surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center and can return to their normal activities within a week to ten days. Our tubal reversal doctors, Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith, recommend that patients who are travelling more than 12 hours stay an extra day before returning home. Heavy lifting (more than 15 pounds) should be avoided for 4 weeks, but other activities of daily living may be resumed as you are comfortable. Walking short distances is not only okay, but it also will help prevent complications associated with inactivity after surgery.

129) What Everyone Should Know About Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal Surgery
Patients who have had tubal ligation surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center often inquire about the steps to take once they have become pregnant. Part of our long-term follow-up care after your tubal reversal is following your early pregnancy along with you and your local physician. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith recommend monitoring your early pregnancy with quantitative serum HCG assays twice a week (at 2-3 day intervals) and scheduling a vaginal ultrasound exam when your HCG level reaches 1500. HCG is the pregnancy hormone. Maintaining long-term patient follow-up to ascertain each pregnancy and to be informed about the outcome of each pregnancy after tubal reversal is one of the priorities at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

138) New Tubal Reversal Blog: Essure Reversal: What You Need To Know
Dr. Monteith informs Tubal Reversal Message Board members of a new blog, Essure Reversal: What You Need To Know. This blog provides answers to the common questions asked by women who inquire about Essure sterilization reversal surgery. Essure sterilization is a new tubal occlusion technology that was approved for use in the United States in November 2002. The procedure causes the tubes to heal closed in the isthmic portion of the tube. This is the narrowest portion of the fallopian tube as the tube travels through the wall of the uterus. During the procedure, the physician uses a small camera to insert a metal coil through the cavity of the uterus and into the opening of each tube. The coil itself does not block the tube. The tube closes because the insert causes fibrosis (scarring) of the inside of the tube. This procedure is effective at preventing pregnancy and is intended to be permanent; however, it is possible to perform Essure sterilization reversal. We perform Essure reversals as an out-patient procedure which typically lasts less than 90 minutes. The Essure reversal procedure is a tubouterine implantation and is performed through a small abdominal incision. Our surgical facility is a tubal surgery center exclusively dedicated to reversal of tubal sterilization and correction of tubal blockage.

139) Tubal Reversal Pregnancy Study 2009 - Pregnancy Outcomes By Tubal Lengths

140) Essure Sterilization Can Be Reversed
The tubal reversal doctors at ChapelHill Tubal Reversal Center provide insight into Essure sterilization reversal. This article explains an increasing number of inquires regarding Essure sterilization and Essure reversal. Tubouterine implantation can reverse the Essure procedure, a healthy portion of each fallopian tube is reinserted into the uterine cavity on both sides of the uterus. This procedure bypasses the scarred portion of the tube and causes the Essure to be reversed.

141) Pre-Operative Lab Work Prior To Tubal Reversal Surgery
A Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center message board member 'Devoncroix' writes, "Is there somewhere I can have the pre-operative blood work done? I have seen private labs named as possibilities in other threads and was wondering if you can have everything done at one of those or if some things could only be done by a private doctor?" Prior to tubal reversal surgery Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith require all their patients to have some blood tests. We check a complete blood count (CBC), HIV-1 antibody, Hepatitis B surface antigen, and a Hepatitis C antibody. Additional lab tests may be required depending upon an individual's medical history. Abnormal test results indicating medical problems will delay scheduling surgery until corrected. Your local doctor can perform the required tests or you can go to a local laboratory such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostic. Please request your doctor or lab to fax the test results to us at (919) 967-8637. You can also give us the fax number to your doctor's office or a local laboratory and we will fax an order for your tests. Pre-operative lab results are due in our office at least 3 weeks prior to the surgery date. Testing should be performed within 3 - 5 days of scheduling surgery, but not more than 90 days prior to the surgery date.

Message board members and staff congratulate her and await recent pictures to be posted. He was totally on board with what Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center recommends and encourages tubal reversal patients to have monitoring with early pregnancies." Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith's protocol recommends biweekly blood work to check HCG levels. When your hcg level reaches 1500-2000, a vaginal ultrasound should be performed to make sure the pregnancy sac is seen in the uterus. Finding and establishing care with your local doctor before becoming pregnant will make it easier to follow our recommendations for early pregnancy monitoring. An early evaluation of your pregnancy will decrease anxiety and make this important time for you transition smoother.

'Roslyn', a Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center message board member posts, "I would like to know if my cycle is on then can the tubal reversal still be performed, or do I have to wait until it's finish? Sometimes, it may come on a little earlier or later than scheduled." Many women start their menstrual cycle just prior to or on the day of their tubal reversal surgery. Having your cycle start around the time of your tubal reversal is not a problem. It is advised for women to wear a pad instead of a tampon on the day of surgery. The nurses understand this is a sensitive matter and treat your concerns with privacy and respect. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is a private, outpatient surgery center which has a high staff/patient ratio with one or two nurses devoted specifically to your care while you are here.
