176) Essure Reversal Surgery Is Possible
Essure is a birth control device available as an alternative to traditional tubal ligation methods. The Essure is a spring-like device inserted through the cervix and into the tubal openings using a small camera. The device expands to fill the tubal opening and causes scar tissue to form. The scarring from the Essure results in closure of the narrowest portion of the tubes as they travel through the uterine wall. Essure sterilization can be reversed, but the Essure insert cannot be simply pulled out because the scar formation seals the insert inside the tube. Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. Monteith are performing tubal reimplantation procedures to reverse Essure sterilization. Tubal reimplantation provides a 30-50% chance of pregnancy success. Tubal reversal surgeries are performed 5 days a week. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is the only medical facility exclusively dedicated to tubal ligation reversal.

During hotel rounds, we will answer any questions you or your responsible adult may have. After your evaluation, you can then return home at your earliest convenience.

179) HSG After Tubal Reversal Surgery
Patients often wonder how long it usually takes to conceive following tubal reversal surgery. For most women 6-12 months is considered a reasonable amount of time before conception. Some women consider an HSG after this time period to establish whether their tubes have remained open after healing from the surgery. The HSG is an x-ray where dye is flushed through the cervix and into the uterus and tubes. When the HSG is done correctly, tubal patency can be documented by visualizing the spillage of dye through the ends of the fallopian tubes and into the abdominal cavity. When patients have an HSG, Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith recommend both the films and the report be mailed to them for examination. Since our tubal reversal surgeons know exactly where the tubes have been rejoined, they are often able to interpret the HSG films with greater accuracy than a physician who is not familiar with your surgical findings.

In the second article of the series on robotic tubal ligation reversal, the tubal ligation reversal experts of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center present the most current medical studies on the success and effectiveness of robotic tubal reversal compared to standard microsurgical tubal ligation reversal. 181) Is Tubal Ligation Reversal an Option?
Women on the website of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center discuss whether tubal reversal surgery is right for them. One way to determine if tubal reversal surgery is the best choice for you is through your tubal ligation operative report. Our reversal specialists are able to review these reports and provide a medical recommendation on a patient's candidacy for reversal surgery. We provide a Medical Records Release Form to assist you with obtaining your report. If you cannot get a copy of your tubal ligation operative report, Dr. Berger or Dr. Monteith can begin your surgery with screening laparoscopy to examine your fallopian tubes and determine if tubal reversal is likely to be successful. If so, the tubes will be repaired immediately. If your tubal ligation has severely damaged your tubes and repair is not possible, you will be given a partial refund. The "laparoscopy package" is excellent insurance in situations when the type of tubal ligation is unknown. Fortunately, our doctors are able to repair the tubes in 98% of cases.

She hesitates to call her OB/GYN if she only has the flu. Nurse Jennifer, a staff member, encourages her to be seen as soon as possible by her physician for a blood pregnancy test. This question was asked by a new member on the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Message Board. Nurse Susie answers, "During your surgery, Dr. Berger and Dr Monteith will remove both clips if the clips are visible. After removing the clips, the surgeons will then repair both tubes. This is true for Filshie clips, Hulka clips, and Falope rings. If the clips can not be easily seen the tubes can still be easily repaired and pregnancy will be possible." After tubal reversal surgery the highest pregnancy rate (87%) is reported by women age 29 or less who underwent tubal reversal of a previous ring or clip method of sterilization. These and other pregnancy statistics can be found on our website.

If so, the tubes will be repaired immediately. If the tubal ligation has severely damaged the tubes and repair is not possible, patients will be given a partial refund. The laparoscopy is excellent from of insurance in situations when the type of tubal ligation is unknown. Fortunately, our surgeons are able to repair the tubes in 98% of the cases.

The nurses at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center review with each patient Dr. Berger's and Dr. Monteith's recommendations to use ovulation predictor kits (OPK) to assist with pregnancy after tubal reversal surgery. The ovulation predictor kit will help to pinpoint a woman's most fertile time, the time when she releases an egg (ovulates). A Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center message board member and tubal reversal patient of Dr. Berger's asks when is it appropriate to have HSG testing after tubal reversal surgery? Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith advise their patients towait for at least 6 to 12 months after a reversal procedure before testing to see if the tubes are open. An HSG carries a risk of infection and is not always accurate. It is best to give pregnancy a chance rather than rushing to have an HSG. Most patients conceive within this 12 month time frame and will avoid the need for an unnecessary HSG test.
